NANAIMO - A litter of starving pit-bull puppies on the verge of death has been turned over to the Nanaimo SPCA. Cruelty investigator Julie Hitchcock says a pair of teenager dog owners were trying to make a few bucks for the holidays by selling the dogs on the internet.
The SPCA was tipped off about the litter of puppies after they appeared on the website Craigslist advertised for $600 each. It's the third batch of puppies now recovering at the Nanaimo SPCA from horrifying treatment at the hands of so-called "backyard breeders."
Hitchcock says 33 dogs have been taken into custody in the past two weeks. Eighteen puppies are now up for adoption.
The smallest was comatose and near death when the SPCA found it. The SPCA will help nurse it along with the rest of the litter back to health and then look for a loving family for adoption. The SPCA is urging people to help stop backyard breeding by reporting anything suspicious by asking dog breeders lots of questions about how the animals are cared, who their vet is, and why they dogs are being sold in the first place.

We were approached by a Vancouver resident wanting to help spread the message to Shut Down Puppy Mills with the use of their vehicle and so we created a "car magnet" for her to display.
Whenever you see this dedicated individual be sure to show your support with either a welcome wave or honk.
Get details on how you can have your own car magnet to help end the misery of puppy mills.
Last week, the Humane Society of Canada saved more than 200 dogs from another horrific puppy mill. This massive rescue operation was their second in just six days!
With your help, we rescued more than 300 dogs, 7 cats and a rabbit from two of the worst puppy mill operations our team has ever seen.
Please watch our video from the rescue, and make a special gift today to ensure we can save even more animals from miserable lives in puppy mills.
SPONSOR A BILLBOARD DOG WALK
This event is still "cooking on the back burner" and as of yet all the details have not been worked out.
